The Audit: Does the Morning After Tell the Truth?
One packed bag. Two competing readings of a relationship on the edge.
Listen · Debate
At 1:40 a.m., one partner packs a duffel bag and heads for the door. The other begs them to stay.
At 7:15 a.m., the bag is still there. They step over it.
Does that quiet choice reveal what the desperate promises of the night concealed? Or is the bag another test in a cycle neither person knows how to escape?
Two voices examine my short story, The Audit, and offer competing interpretations. One sees a truth revealed by an ordinary morning action. The other sees a repeating pattern of provocation, reassurance, and testing.
The discussion reveals the story’s ending. The interpretations belong to the generated discussion; they aren’t a definitive explanation of the characters or a statement of my own position.
